Hubble telescope shows earliest photo of universe

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the earliest image yet of the universe just 600 million years after the Big Bang, when the universe was just a toddler.Scientists released the photo on January 5 at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. It’s the most complete picture of the early universe so far, showing galaxies with stars that are already hundreds of millions of years old, along with the unmistakable primordial signs of the first cluster of stars.

the Hubble Space Telescope.

These young galaxies haven’t yet formed their familiar spiral or elliptical shapes and are much smaller and quite blue in colour. That’s mostly because at this stage, they don’t contain many heavy metals, said Garth Illingworth, a Astronomy professor, University of California, Santa Cruz, who was among those releasing the photo.

“We’re seeing very small galaxies that are seeds of the great galaxies today,” Illingworth said in a news conference.

Until NASA’s Hubble telescope was repaired and upgraded last year, the farthest back in time that astronomers could see was about 900 million years after the Big Bang, Illingworth said.

Hubble has been key in helping determine the age of the universe at about 13.7 billion years, ending a long scientific debate about a decade ago.As far back as Hubble can see, it still doesn’t see the first galaxies. For that, NASA will have to rely on a new observatory, the $4.5 billion James Webb telescope, which is set to launch in about four years.“We are on the way to the beginning,” said astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson of the American Museum of Natural History. “Every step closer to the beginning tells you something you did not know before.”

The new Hubble picture captures those distant simpler galaxies juxtaposed amid closer, newer and more evolved ones. The result is a cosmic family photo that portrays galaxies at different ages and stages of development over the course of more than 13 billion years. Tyson, who was not involved in the Hubble image research, said most people only like their own baby pictures, but Hubble’s photo is different: “These are the baby pictures for us all, hence the widespread interest.”

DALADA PROCESSION

DALADA PROCESSION
The Dalada Procession of Kandy
The month of Asala (July), during which period this annual pageant is usually held, had been considered a month of celebrations and festivity, both among Indians and Sri Lankans. Even from the lifetime of the Buddha in the 6th century BC, the Asala festival was held to commemorate the Buddha’s Conception, his Renunciation and the First Sermon. Asala is also considered to be the beginning of the raining season (Vassana) when the monks commence their Retreat. Also, this month is considered to be the period when ritual performances to the protective divinities are held, (eg Pattini puja) as recorded in the text ‘Pattini-Halla’. Being considered a ‘chaste’ month, the period is held sacred for the availability of water, hence prosperity.

Several records have been left behind by dignitaries and other visitors to the island such as Robert Knox, John Davy, etc. The description of the perahara. These accounts provide much evidence as to the constitution and organization of the present day perahara. Yet many features seem to have been added and some changed to suit the time and the available resources and conditions.

The earliest record maintained on the Kandy annual pageant was by Robert Knox, an Englishman who lived in the court of Kandy for many years as a prisoner during the time of Rajashimha II (1636-1684). According to Knox, the Kandy perahara was conducted purely to honor the Devale divinities, Alutnuvara (Uppalavanna), Kataragama and Pattini. The Natha Devale, however, though the oldest shrine in Kandy, was not mentioned by Knox. During the time of King Kirti Sri Rajasimha the Natha Devale too is mentioned in the processions of the four Devales. The most important feature that occurred at this time was the addition of the Tooth Relic procession to the processions of the four Devales. It is said that the king himself placed the Relic casket in the ‘Ransivige’ fixed on to the back of the tusker. The Mahavamsa further records that the procession held by King Kirti Sri Rajasimha with all splendors assumed the form of a national festival.

Celebrate victory in peaceful manner - SLFP

SLFP General Secretary, Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena appealed to the public to celebrate the victory of the Presidential Election in a peaceful manner. “Do not take revenge from your opponents. Celebrate it peacefully, he said.

He said the pact with the TNA Sambandan group signed by Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sarath Fonseka which President Mahinda Rajapaksa had outright rejected, has resulted in creating deep disappointment among the people, he said.,“Sri Lankans will no doubt defeat the sinister aims of the Western powers designed to dethrone Mahinda Rajapaksa from the Sri Lankan presidency.

Bid to disrupt polling in Jaffna aborted
Fonseka’s failure to vote not a problem, say Ranil, ex – CJ
by Shamindra Ferdinando and Norman Palihawadana

Contrary to fears expressed, the first peacetime presidential election, following the defeat of the LTTE last May, was held yesterday (January 26) without any serious incidents of violence, though some elements made an abortive bid to disrupt polling in the Jaffna peninsula.

The police and the military said that heavy presence of law enforcement personnel backed by security forces had ensured a peaceful environment. Independent Election monitors, too, said the election had been largely free and fair though they had received about three dozen complaints.

The Election Secretariat said that polling had been brisk in almost all in areas outside the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Sources said that overall voter-turn out was expected to be around 70 per cent though in areas previously held and dominated by the LTTE, it was low.

The government deployed over 100,000 officers and men to provide security.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said that an unidentified person had carried out a grenade attack on the home of Subramanium Sharma, SLFP Uduppidi coordinator at 3.30 a.m. on Tuesday. Sharma was quoted by the CMEV as saying that he had received threats last Saturday (January 23) not to vote.

Five persons were killed in pre-poll clashes, according to the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence.

Security officials and the CMEV said that explosions had been reported from Nallur, Manipay, Vaddukoddai, Chavakachcheri and Tellipillai in the Jaffna peninsula though there were no injuries or deaths among the civilian community. They said that a bicyle, a tea kiosk and a shop were damaged.

The CMEV expressed concern over the absence of transport as promised by Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake to facilitate the war displaced to reach polling booths.

Government sources told The Island that the Election Secretariat had made all possible arrangements to ensure the internally displaced received free transport.

Sources said that some critics had conveniently forgotten the environment in which the last presidential election was conducted in November 2005.

Recalling early presidential polls, President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared that he wanted to give an opportunity to Tamil speaking people to exercise their franchise as the LTTE had sabotaged the previous poll.

Quiet poll

The election to elect the Sixth Executive President of Sri Lanka was peaceful in all parts of the country. Polling started at 7.00 a.m in all 22 electoral districts and concluded by 4.00 p.m yesterday. Polling was brisk in most districts except in the North that was experiencing an election under peaceful conditions after a lapse of over three decades.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told the media that the polling was quite peaceful everywhere including Jaffna, Vanni and Vavuniya.

The Hambantota district had nearly 61 percent voter turnout by noon while Matara and Galle Districts also recorded 51 percent and 50 percent respectively. Even remote districts like Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Digamadulla, Batticaloa, Kegalle, and Ratnapura districts had a high voter turnout. Police spokesman SSP I. M. Karunaratne told the Daily News yesterday that except for a few minor incidents reported in a few areas there was no violence reported during the poll.

Nuwara Eliya District had witnessed a 70 percent voter turnout at 2.00 pm while Batticaloa reported 40 percent by noon yesterday. The lowest voter turnout was reported from the Jaffna electoral division of 5 percent by 2.00 pm.

In all the other districts too polling was brisk in the morning and an average of over 70 percent poll was expected when the poll ended at 4.00 p.m Yesterday’s presidential election was by far the most peaceful election in recent times and sufficient security in and around the polling stations was provided by the police and mobile police patrols were also deployed to prevent any untoward or violent incidents.
