A team from Tigo Sri Lanka returned from Riyadhfollowing talks with a team from telecom giant Mobily, according to statement issued by the two companies. The meeting evaluated possibilities of establishing an understanding between the two telecom companies, aimed at exploring ways and means of maximizing on the Etisalat group of companies and synergizing operations to positively impact Sri Lanka. Tigo CEO Dumindra Ratnayaka said, “this sharing of expertise will help us move towards providing superior, more innovative and customer focused products and services.” He added, “ Etisalat has prominent global presence in the Saudi, UAE and the subcontinent- we hope to leverage on the stakes held in those countries in order to benefit Sri Lanka.”
Mobily is the brand name of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s key telecommunications company, the Etihad-Etisalat consortium. The consortium is led by Etisalat of the United Emirates telecom, which owns 27.4% of Mobily. Other key investors include the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI), which holds an additional 11.2%. Mobily has expanded its operations rapidly since it commercial launch on May 25, 2005, and grew its subscriber base to one million subscribers inside of 90 days. By the end of 2008 it had 14.8 million customers. The company is on the cutting edge of technology adoption. In 2007, Mobily launched the region’s first unlimited mobile Internet bundle, and after a little more than two years now counts one million mobile broadband subscribers. High speed packet access (HSPA) is available to 80% of the population through the company’s coverage of 326 regions, cities and areas inside the Kingdomof Saudi Arabia’s geographical expanse of 2.149 million square kilometers. Additionally, Mobily offers its customers access to the latest technologies and was the first operator in the Kingdom to launch the BlackBerry platform at the end of 2006 and the only operator in the Kingdom to officially carry the iPhone in partnership with Apple.
The talks between Tigo and Mobily are an initial step towards creating a telephonic revolution in Sri Lanka, through increased global synergy in product and service range, and impacting core areas of international communications such as international roaming and international direct dialing. It will also focus on bringing down technology, products, services, content and content management tools. Being the first cellular network in Sri Lanka, Tigo Sri Lanka has one of the largest mobile networks in the country. Since it’s inception in 1989 twenty years ago, Tigo has consistently provided not only the widest coverage and an unprecedented level of service, but also a host of other innovative solutions to the Sri Lankan market.
