
Under 19 school cricket

St. Sebastian’s recorded their third win of the season when they beat St. Anthony’s, Katugastota by four wickets in their under 19 Division I cricket match ended at Moratuwa on Saturday. It was an even game till the final session, but the home team was good enough to end up victorious at the end of the day. Sebastianites declared at their overnight score of 263-7 in reply to the Anthonians first innings of 148. In their second essay the visitors made 238, but their first innings deficit of 115 hurt them badly and Sebastianites were left with an easy target of 125 to chase with ample overs to spare. They got their losing six wickets.
Off-spinning duo, Koshan Danushka and Dinuk Jayasinghe gave Nalanda a comfortable innings and 106 run win over Joseph Vaz, in their match played at Wennappuwa. Replying to the mammoth Nalanda first innings score of 340 the home team only managed 141 in their first innings. Forced to follow-on they were shot out for 93 with Jayasinghe taking 5/29 and Jayasinghe 4/18. Both bowlers ended with match bags of seven wickets each.
De Mazenod cruised to a seven-wicket win over Kalutara Vidyalaya at Wattala, thanks to a superb second innings bowling performance from off-spinner TAD Maduranga who took 6 wickets for 13 runs. Kalutara were put out for totals of 121 and 137 leaving the Mazenodians a target of 73 to chase which they achieved at the cost of three wickets.
A captain’s knock of 103 off 153 balls (15 fours, 1 six) from Ishan Ibunu saw Zahira draw their match against Mahanama at Maradana. After being dismissed for 184 in the first innings Zahira put up a better batting performance in the second to total 258-8. Mahanama who scored 330-9 were let down by some poor fielding. Their right-arm leg-spinner Indunil Kumara had a match bag of eight wickets.
Batsmen made merry at Reid Avenue as both Ananda and Royal settled for a high scoring draw. Ananda made 319-6 in their first innings and in reply Royal declared at 260-8. Ananda in their second innings were 232- 5 at stumps.
A sparkling all-round performance from Wesley captain Dulanjana Wijesinghe earned major honors for Wesley in their drawn match played for the M Sathasivam Trophy against S. Thomas’ at Campbell Park. Wijesinghe who scored 60 in the Wesley first innings of 247-9, ended up with a match bag of 9 for 116 with his off-spinners. Earlier the Thomians declared their first innings at 246-9 and in their second essay were 207-4 with Nuwan Kavinda scoring an unbeaten 115 off 113 balls (3 sixes, 11 fours).
A second innings century by Shehan Fernando was the only highlight of the day in the drawn encounter between St. Peter’s and Prince of Wales at Moratuwa. Fernando made 109 off 157 balls (6 sixes, 12 fours).
Mahinda and Dharmaraja settled for a high scoring draw at Galle International stadium. Rahula Ekanayake who was unbeaten on 85 went on to make 106 off 226 balls (11 fours, 1 six) as the visitors declared on 307-8. Mahinda were 150-2 in reply.
Thurstan recovered from a bad start losing 4-66 to score 236 thanks to two half centuries from Jehan Javid (52) and Praboda Arthavidu (50). They were replying to St Benedict’s first innings of 268 in their match which ended in a draw at Kotahena. The Bens were 166-1 in their second innings.
Maris Stella is on course for an innings win against President’s, Rajagiriya in their match played at BOI ground, Katunayake. Maristonians declared at 301- 9 and the visitors were in deep trouble losing 9 wickets for 69 runs at close of the first day. Off-spinner Angelo Jayasinghe and Sathira Dilip ended with figures 4/6 runs and 3/1respectively.
At Piliyandala, the match between Piliyandala Central and Rahula, Katugastota had to be abandoned on the second day without a ball being bowled when a helicopter used for the election campaign landed on the ground. Right-arm leg-spinner Sameera Chathuranga took 6 wickets for 59 runs in Rahula’s first innings of 206. Piliyandala ended the first day at 120-2 in reply.
